Episode 1 of #SmartInnovators : Timothée Boitouzet, Founder & CEO of Woodoo SAS.
Timothée is the head of Woodoo – a French startup that secured a H2020 SME Instrument grant for their impressive technology that allows to rebuild wood on a molecular level to make it the most innovative material of the 21st century! Woodoo achieved one of the highest scores through the SME instrument with only one shot at it, receiving a 14.7 out of 15 with the support of EU Startup Services’ team.
Weatherproof, fire-resistant and three times more mechanically performative than native wood, Woodoo’s carbon footprint is 2 times lower than concrete’s and 130 times lower than that of steel. The technology that results in the augmented wood is sustainable as it does not release any harmful toxic substances, making it an eco-friendly innovation.
When asked about the key to Woodoo’s success, Timothée underlined the importance of the ecological aspect, “When we met with the jury in Brussels, we could feel that the global ambition of Woodoo and our commitment to have the largest positive environmental impact was very well received.”
In addition, he underlined, “Our development strategy and dissemination plan was also well thought out. We have accomplished tremendous progress for a 2-year-old MaterialTech startup in a short amount of time which shows a great deal of dedication from our team and partners.”
Even though the company is just two years old, their patented technology has been awarded with multiple innovation prizes – both within and outside of Europe. The French national environmental office supports the project, together with Troyes university which provides a nanomaterial center according to the company’s needs.
With a €3 billion budget until 2020 to award 7500 startups with up to €2.5 million, the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument is the largest, most competitive non-dilutive fund in the world. The success of the programme is directly linked to the quality of the selection procedure.
The Instrument only selects the best companies with the most innovative ideas, a real chance of disrupting the market and a very high growth potential. It is easy to see why it is regarded as the holy grail of funding: since its launch in 2014, the Instrument has received 47,000 applications, only to fund 3200 Smart Innovators across 37 countries.
“The SME Instrument is a fundamental way to drag attention and confirm Woodoo’s technological and business excellence,” said Timothee. He further explained, “EU Startup Services encouraged us to apply even though we were quite early-stage as opposed to more mature startups that we were competing against. This winning application was our first SME Instrument Phase 2 attempt, and we reached success with one of the highest scores in 2018: 14.7 out of 15. EU Startup Services helped us to structure our application in the smartest possible way and was also very supportive during rushing hours and late night work throughout this fortunate experience.”
